2007-06 Keep It Small - Keep It Simple
By Donboy
2007-06 Keep It Small - Keep It Simple As the weather clears and once more I make progress with the remodeling on my house I wonder from time to time if I started to large a project. As the months and the years! go by and it is still not completed perhaps I did.  Well things are looking up because we are starting to use the new areas of the house and each week nice progress is made.  So my taking on to much might become history and I will be able to move on to other things.

The long term effort on the remodeling has made me if bit more cautious about how much I want to take on with my layout at one time.  I have four locations or towns on my planned layout and the I have the option to build the layout one town at a time.  Of course it takes less time to "complete" one town compared to a layout but it is not that simple.  You can put up benchwork in a day or two.  So while I am convinced that I should detail one town at a time but I still don't know if the benchwork and all the track plus wiring should go in first.  At this time I am thinking all the benchwork at once and installing the track one town at a time.

One thing I am sure of is my satisfaction from a layout will be based on satisfying operation and enjoyment of construction is secondary.  My towns are setup for switching interest so when one town is complete I will have a switching layout on my hands.  The only risk from completing one town at a time is the enjoyment of running one town as a switching layout might be so high I get distracted by having to much fun with it and don't get the rest of the layout completed.  For me this is a hobby and my goal is to enjoy myself so it seems like a good trade off if my entertainment gets in the way of the layout being completed.
