Water and Wood Car
From Mike Lynch
Water and Wood Car

This is what you end up with once you take a ON30 bachman oil tank car, take the tank off and start hacking away.

I started by cutting the area between the queen posts out by 8 scale ft, effectively making the 28 ft car now 20 foot. I took a banta laser cut floor for the flatcar and applied it to the surface ,removing the excess wood.

I went out and purchased an HO Athearn chemical tank car, savagely cut 2/3 of the tank away and gluing it back together to make the small tank you see. I made a brass collar to raise up the filler tube area. I cut the tank holding wood blocks, which are too hold it in place, from 12 x 24 scale basswood and inserted nut bolt and washer castings into them.  These were dipped into alcohol ink mixture to weather them.

I painted the floor underneathe to simulate a wood floor deck and painted the frame a weathered black with touches of rust.  I managed to re-use the factory Bachman metal across the tank straps....dusted on a little green powder from Bragdon to weather this up a little.

For the front area that is meant to hold cord wood , I constructed some boards from 2 x 10 basswood and the posts from 4x4 , trimmed the ends to fit into the post carriers cast into the side. From there I applied metal straps with NBW cast into them. these are actually Grandt Line hinges that I cheat with....but hey they look great.

I am still tinkering with this.....installing a pump and hose system to suck water from the creek and then pump it into the water tank.
