Service Contracts
From Donboy

Service contracts cover several types of service. For the Rock County there are contracts to transfer cars from the yard to the two towns that are supported by the yard, contracts to spot or pull cars, hauling the cars over the main line into the yard and contracts for switching an industry. For my main line run is from staging to the yard I am looking at using a computer simulation to run the main line but need to spend some to see how that would work.

Customer demands for service will be entered into the computer as routes and average number of cars per day. Service contracts will be the total of all the service needed and parts of the contract can be serviced by several companies or one company.

For example:
Company A needs 10 cars on average for six sessions to be hauled over the mainline (empties from staging) to the yard, from the yard to Eagle's Nest, empties spotted at the required spot, loaded cars pulled, loaded cars back to the yard and at the end of the day the loaded cars go over the mainline into staging.

The contract items and costs would be:

  • The mainline haul empty and loaded
  • The yard fee would be added because the cars would go into the yard
  • The transfer from the yard to Eagle's Nest empty and loaded
  • Spotting and Pulling cars from the customer

The example could be three companies each doing one stage or one company that bid lower then the sum for the other bids for doing all the stages. If the road crew would switch the spots and pulls it might take to long so because the transfer crew could not start switching until they got there so at times it might be a good idea to use a local switching crew at the industry and use your crews to make the transfer to drop off the empties and pickup the loaded cars.

When biding on contracts the managers will be able to use screens that will do the calculations for them so they can see what they need to bid to make money. It will not be the same for everyone because you might have a train making a transfer at the right time of day and the extra cost of 10 added cars would be less then the guy who had to run a new train.

Contracts would cover x number of sessions and the price bid would be by car load.

A new contrct is a big project so nornally we will add only one a night.
