With general amusement, it was observed that Fair Weather was preparing to put
in a vegetable garden. When Fair Weather placed his order for vegetable
seed, he should have been warned by the observational question, "you are
not from around here are you?". Not deterred by lack of
encouragement for his project, Fair Weather proceeded to prepare a sizeable
plot behind his house. It was not until Fair Weather started planting
seed that he found out why his garden project had so many
skeptics. Jack rabbits were following him down the rows
removing and eating the seeds as fast as he was putting them in!
Fair Weather could handle the rabbits, he bought several rolls of chicken
wire and fenced his garden. It turned out that he had under
estimated how high a jack rabbit could jump when they had the
motivation of a good meal. The garden fence received four height
extensions before it was to high for the rabbits to jump over.
When the fence was to high to jump, the rabbits started their tunneling
project and tunneled under the fence from all directions. After
several fruitless days trying to plug the holes, Fair Weather started
policing his garden with a shotgun and his new dog Spot. Night
after night Fair Weather and Spot slept by the garden as it sprouted and gave
promise of the bounty to come. As time went on Fair Weather and Spot
became sleepier and the rabbits became bolder. Last night the
garden project reached it's climax, both Fair Weather and Spot fell
into to deep a sleep and they woke to find the garden stripped bare.
Fair Weather has been mumbling about having a garden next year, but most are
betting on the rabbits. |
