It might be April but it is no joke that I have started doing some modeling!
I am building a Danby sawmill using cast plaster bricks in place
of the wood construction in the kit. After all, if you have a
sawmill out in the sticks in Middle Earth it needs to be safe from
attack! When I have more time I will write about my extension of
Middle Earth into the 6th age to explain how I can have
trains and people running around with swords and bows.
I
plan to
add a planing building and have a loading area to provide some action
for my new switching pike. I will not bring logs to the mill by
train as the logs will come by water (Down the River Running and across
the Sea of Rhun in log rafts). After cars of lumber are
loaded they will be shipped by barge or ferry. Moving cars off the
ferry, spotting cars to be loaded, pulling loaded cars and spotting
any supplies to be unloaded should provide plenty of action. I plan
to call my switching pike “Swan's Landing” and to have the mill
owned by the Swan Lumber Company. Some of the lumber will be shipped
on flat cars but most of it will go out in box cars. My grandfather
Swan had a small sawmill and a steam boat landing so I plan to honor my
family history with this project.
