Room Preparation - Walls
From Donboy
Room Preparation - Walls I have a walk out basement and when the house was built I had the framed walls finished with sheet rock and texture. To complete the room I had to put studs over the concrete area of the walls. I did not think I could match the texture of the walls on the framing so I troweled on a stucco texture on the sheet rock I added. I plan to paint the walls with colors to make the framed walls look like plaster walls and the new stucco walls look like stone. After I paint I will need to install finish trim lumber to create a finished ledge where the stucco wall ends and then paint it. To much painting! but it has to be done now because I don't want to be painting with the layout in place.

Getting to the Walls

Getting to the Walls All the extra stuff we did not have a place for was piled in front of the walls. Before I could work on them, I had to get to them. I purchased some large plastic boxes and most of the loose items fit into them. When the benchwork is done, the boxes will be stored under the benchwork. It worked and I was able to get to the walls to work on them.
Painting the Walls

Painting the Walls

The master plan was to use a faux finish to make the new wall area look like rock. I had never done a faux finish before and the basement seemed like the best place to try it for the first time. To my surprise, the faux finish did not go as planned. I think the basic problem was that I tried to apply my second color as a wash and wipe it down. Using water base paint as a wash did not work well because you did not have the time you needed to work it before it dried.

I put a third coat of paint on (this was vexing because I don't like painting) and I now have a wall that is close to plain gray. It does have a concrete brick tone to it that is "interesting". The end result was not worth the work but I did learn a lot about faux finishes.
